FAQ
What does the recruitment process involve?
For the Hospice, Alan Hudson Centre and in our shops you will need to: send us an application, attend an informal interview, provide 1 reference and complete a short piece of online training, including a video induction. In our shops your induction will be based in the shop itself. You will feel well prepared when you start your role!
What is the commitment?
We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months for volunteering at the Hospice or Alan Hudson Centre. For our shops we ask for a minimum of 2 months unless part of an educational programme such as DofE. The majority of roles require 2-3 hours weekly or fortnightly.
How do you ensure your volunteering experience is inclusive?
We welcome difference and will always work with you to ensure your experience meets your needs. This may include but is not limited to: adjusting shift patterns around prayer times or religious or cultural commitments, changing your base to suit your needs, adapting paperwork, meetings or information to make it more accessible and reimbursing expenses. We encourage you to share the ways in which we can support you best to help you gain the most from your volunteering experience.
What happens if I need to pause my volunteering or have to cancel a shift?
That’s not a problem! Just let us know as soon as possible so we can make alternative arrangements. Volunteering should be flexible and fit around your other commitments. If you need to take a break that’s ok.
Are there any restrictions on volunteering?
If you have experienced a close bereavement within 1 and a ½ years we invite you to volunteer in our fundraising team or our shops. 6 months after a close bereavement you can volunteer in our Bistro or gardens. After 1 and a ½ years post close bereavement you are welcome to volunteer in patient-facing roles. We ask you be at least 17 years old for volunteering in the Hospice or Alan Hudson Centre and 18 years for our shops.
Can my expenses be reimbursed?
We can reimburse reasonable travel expenses for mandatory shifts, events or training. We want volunteering to be accessible to all. If you would like to know more please contact us.
What are your green/environmental practices at the Charity?
Environmental sustainability is very important to us all, which is why the Charity’s five-year strategy is working towards a net zero carbon approach. You can find lots of information here: www.arhc.org.uk/about-us/our-organisation/our-green-ways
