Inpatient Unit & Arthur's Shed Volunteer

Volunteer

Daksha volunteers as a Receptionist on the Inpatient Unit and also delivers Meditation Sessions in Arthur’s Shed.

She kindly shared more about her roles and experiences with us:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I sort of retired in 2018. I used to work for a research group within Cambridge University but was made redundant and thought I’d have a year out. However, after a year I then decided to have early retirement.

I keep myself busy as I enjoy volunteering here at Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and other places too.

I also run meditation sessions (in Arthur’s Shed too), love reading, going for long walks in nature, cooking and baking, as well as photography.

How did you find out about volunteering for the Charity?
From a friend who is a nurse, and who did her training at the Hospice.

What was it that drew you to this particular role?
I enjoy meeting people and enjoy clerical duties. I was drawn to this role because of my passion for caregiving.

What do you enjoy about your role?
I feel I am helping the nurses while I am there, as they can get on with their duties. I also enjoy meeting the patients’ families who come to visit, as well as the other staff and nurses who work there.

I enjoy being a part of the team at the Inpatient Unit and being in such a caring and compassionate environment for patients and their families at such a difficult time in their lives.

What surprised you about volunteering for the Charity?
People think a hospice is only for the end of life, therefore a sad place to be and visit but working there I have realised it is such a wonderful place, as they do so much more. It’s a beautiful environment, peaceful as well as a cheerful place to visit or work. Everyone is so friendly. There are also other facilities and treatments they offer for patients with serious or life limiting illnesses.

What would you say to anyone considering volunteering?
I would say to them that volunteering is such a wonderful experience. It makes you feel like you’re giving back to society, helping others and by doing that, it gives you so much back too, as it really does make one feel like they are worthy and appreciated. Giving your precious time to others is really satisfying, you feel that you’re contributing and giving something special.
