Donations

Due to the generous donations from our community our Retail Hub is full to the brim! Please hold on to your donations and we will let you know when we are able to take them from you.

From 12 April donations to our shops (and from 13 April to our Retail Hub) can be dropped off (if they are open) after 10.00am until they are full to the daily maximum. As it is difficult to predict a time for this, please telephone the individual shop or Hub before you set off for a special journey with donations. Telephone numbers for our shops and retail hub can be found on our website: arhc.org.uk/open-to-all/shop-with-arhc/visit-our-shops/

We are really looking forward to seeing our customers again and receiving the much needed donations. We predict we will be busy accepting donations, especially in the first few days of opening and we are planning ways to make this as safe and easy transaction for you and our colleagues. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Update on Thursday 16 July 2020 – Shops reopen on Monday 6 July

In light of the government’s recent changes to retail sector rules, we are pleased to announce that we will be re-opening our charity shops, with each store reducing their opening hours and days.

When we placed temporary closing notices in our Charity Shop windows back in March we had no idea of the scale of what we were about to encounter.

Our retail staff and volunteers took an unplanned break and despite the many professional and personal challenges, in true #TeamArthur style, they remained positive and keen to return to welcome our customers. As soon as we were able our teams started to prepare to safely re-open our shops.

You can be reassured that we have taken all measures to ensure our customers, donors, staff and volunteers (when they return) are kept safe whilst we continue to comply with the government’s current guidelines. From Monday 6th July 2020, our charity shops will be opening from 10:00am – 4:00pm on the following days:

  • Burleigh Street, Cambridge – Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
  • Mill Road, Cambridge – Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays
  • Regent Street, Cambridge – Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
  • High Street, Cottenham – Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays
  • Woollards Lane, Great Shelford – Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays

This carefully constructed plan allows at least one of our shops to be open to customers each day of the week.

We have also introduced a new till system to easily transact your purchases and a paperless system if you would like to support the charity further by signing up for gift aid.

Donations

In addition we have been working hard to arrange a safe way for you to continue to donate your pre-loved items to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, as helping us to raise vital funds is as important as ever.

The reduced opening days to our charity shops will allow for the recommended 72 hours resting time for donations to our shops in Burleigh Street and Mill Road in Cambridge. Please note we are open on Thursdays at our Mill Road shop but unable to take donations on that day.

We will provide a white van on a Tuesday from 10am-1pm to our shop in Cottenham, situated on the High Street, which will be parked in front of the shop for anyone wishing to donate items to our charity. Please note once we have a full van we will not be able to take anymore donations on that day.

Due to space and parking restrictions sadly we are currently unable to take donations at our Regent Street shop in Cambridge and Woollards Lane in Great Shelford. We will continue to review the situation and keep you informed of any changes.

UPDATE: Thursday 17 July: Please note that following our first week of accepting donations, we have had to make some adjustments

Due to limited capacity in each shop alongside the resting time needed for donations according to government guidelines, once we have reached full capacity, we will be unable to take further donations until the following week. Our Shop Managers will put a notice up in the window of each shop once the space available for donations has reached its limit. They will be able to tell you when further donations can be delivered. We would like to thank you for your generous donations which are of great value to us, thank you for your cooperation and understanding and apologise for any inconvenience  this causes.

Number of people in the shops at one time
To ensure your shopping experience continues to be a safe and positive one we will limit the number of people allowed in the shop at any one time. The amount of people will differ depending on the size of each of our individual shops. Customers will notice a new signage board displaying this information outside the shops.

Layout of the shops
The layout and amount of stock we display in our shops has been adapted to create more space which enables our customers to spacially distance.

We look forward to welcoming our customers again. For all of us at these unusual times, it really is work in progress. We will ensure to keep you updated with any further changes so please keep checking our social media pages, shop windows and our website news pages.

Joan Smyth, Head of Retail at Arthur Rank Hospice Charity adds:
“We are delighted that we are now able to start preparing our shops for opening and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and support during these unusual times!

News on our new retail hub is that things are moving forward, so keep a look out for more coverage on this over the next few weeks too.”
