In September 2024, Lee Maughan is taking on the challenge of cycling an incredible 980 miles across Britain, in memory of his parents, Carol and Lee Maughan.
Lee, who is the CEO of Green & Purple, and a previous Trustee for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, is using this challenge to raise both vital funds and awareness for the services provided by the Charity, who support people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end of life care.
Lee explains his motivation to take on the challenge:
“I lost my Dad to cancer at the start of this year. Dad died on, pretty much, the ten year anniversary of my Mum losing her fight with cancer too, so to say it was a naff start to the year is an understatement. They’re my motivation for this.
Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is a cause close to my heart. Their Hospice at Home service cared for my mum before she passed away and my dad was always really proud of the work I did there as a Trustee.
I’m delighted to be able to fundraise for them to support the end-of-life care they deliver for the community.”
Covering some of the most scenic landscapes accessible on two wheels, this challenge will see Lee, from Ely, cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Covering the rugged coastline of Cornwall, to the hills of the North and finally the Scottish highlands. Taking place over just nine days, this challenge is a true test of stamina and will.
Lee was a Trustee for the Charity for six years, before stepping down in 2022. Through this experience, he gained insight into how essential fundraiser are to ensure that the Charity can continue to provide its services to patients and their loved ones free of charge.
Having already signed up to Ride Across Britain last year, Lee felt that this was a fitting opportunity to use the challenge as a chance to raise awareness for hospice care provided by the Charity, whilst making it a time for remembrance.
Sharon Allen, CEO of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, commented:
“Lee is a great supporter of our charity, having been a trustee and supporting us in some many different ways. We’re really pleased that we were able to care for his mum which is what led to his involvement with us.
This is a huge physical challenge Lee is undertaking – good job he’s so fit! It will also be an emotional journey for him and we appreciate what he is doing and send him all our best wishes for a successful and hopefully enjoyable ride.
Lee was one of the trustees on the interview panel that appointed me, I’ll be forever grateful to him for giving me the best job!”
