When patients and their loved ones are first supported by Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, the story is often the same, “I didn’t even know this service existed!”

In the hot summer of 2026, Matthew Harris and his team from The Blah Blah Company Ltd, spent time with colleagues, patients and their loved ones, filming their experiences across the different services, including the Inpatient Unit, Living Well Service, in the Community and at the Alan Hudson Centre, to get the message across that our Charity is not just for people at the end of their life and are here to support people with any life limiting condition.

In the ‘About Our Services’ video, colleagues share the Charity’s mission, to make every moment count, by finding out what matters most to that individual and how we can support them with a plan of care that meets their needs, whatever those needs may be. We have a number of services that support people who are living with a life limiting illness and it’s really important that people do that as early as we can.

Living Well Service

When you come down to the Living Well service, you’ll be welcomed by our team which consists of different healthcare professionals such as physio and occupational and complementary therapists. We are teaching people how to learn to manage their symptoms. We are here to get people talking about their future care and what’s important to them but we are also about having fun and helping people to enjoy their lives. Patients have the opportunity to exercise in our air-conditioned gym, receive some of the complementary therapies or go out and explore the gardens in the Hospice. They can then go and sit with other patients or family members, who are coming to pick them up, who might want to join them and share a nice lunch in the Bistro.

Patient and Family Support

We also have our Patient and Family Support Team that provide physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual support and as part of that team, we have art therapists.

The Alan Hudson Centre

At the Alan Hudson Centre we also offer free personalised care and support for individuals living with life-limiting illness across Wisbech and the Fens. We will often take bloods and assess if there’s anything that’s potentially reversible that we can treat while they’re in living well, such as iron deficiency and then arrange an iron infusion. So, we’ll link up with the acute hospital for that.

Community Teams

We have doctors in the community with anybody who has got complexity that just can’t be managed by their usual GP’s and will go out and support people in their own homes or care homes with our Specialist Care Team. Our Hospice at Home Team can give the same care in their home with our specialised support to the patient and the family.

Palliative Care Hub

We are very fortunate that we also have a number of specialist nurses at the end of a telephone via our Palliative Care Hub. Anyone in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough can call 111, select option four and be put through to a specialist for advice and support. It may be that a patient needs a change in medications and that could be in the middle of the night. And so by getting through to one of our specialist nurses who are able to prescribe those medications, they can get prescriptions written promptly and they haven’t got to wait for general practitioners or out-of-hours services to do that.

Inpatient Unit

In our Inpatient Unit at the Hospice, we have specialist beds for people with complex symptoms that may need enhanced support from our Palliative Medicine Consultants and our Senior Palliative Doctors and the Nursing Team. We also have our Medically Light Beds where patients can be supported with their medication or spend their last days at the end of their life, where they and their loved ones can be supported.

The Lymphoedema Service

The Lymphoedema Service is available at the Hospice for treatment and education for patients with primary or secondary lymphoedema. There is an emphasis on best management and encouraging the patient to take on-going control of their condition.

The message at the end of the film from a loved one is:

“Don’t be hesitant, just embrace it and be thankful and grateful that you’ve got this service because it’s brilliant, brilliant people.”

Sara Robins, Director of Clinical Services and Deputy CEO, concluded with:

“Don’t leave it too late.”
