Carly, Inpatient Unit Matron

I can be found anywhere on the Inpatient Unit (IPU) during Monday to Friday in my office, handover room, patient rooms, kitchen, store cupboard, bathroom, literally anywhere.

The IPU provides care for people with a life limiting illness. Patients can be admitted onto the unit for the following reasons, complex symptom control, terminal care, psychological support and carer crisis. I manage the Nursing and administration team that work on the IPU and what a fantastic team they are. I really couldn’t do my job without them.

Part of our job is to check all admissions and discharges on a daily basis and get all patients that need to come into the unit admitted in a timely manner. We then meet with all the other staff involved in the care of these patients from doctors, chaplaincy, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, family support team and social worker to review the patients and plan for the day.

I love spending time with the patients and families and feel very privileged to spend time with them, even if it is sometimes for the shortest of period.
