Arthur Rank Hospice is celebrating becoming a regional champion in the prestigious NHS Parliamentary Awards. The Hospice’s Community Team, which comprises of the Specialist Palliative Home Care team and Hospice at Home team, has won The Care and Compassion Award for the East of England, after being nominated by local MPs Heidi Allen and Rt Hon Stephen Barclay.

The awards supported by Fuji Film, are designed to recognise the massive contribution made by individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. The Care and Compassion Award is open to any care staff member ‘that has used their skills to ensure that patients experience care and compassion’ with the criteria specifying ‘outstanding nominees who have innovated, impressed and made a real difference to how the NHS provides care for patients. […] delivering health and high-quality care, now and for future generations.’

Overall, more than 600 nominations were made by MPs celebrating staff in their constituencies who go above and beyond the call of duty and who make a genuine difference to the people they care for. There were ten award categories, with one regional champion chosen for each, by an expert panel of health and care leaders.

As regional champions, the Arthur Rank Hospice Community Team will be presented with their awards at a special awards ceremony, which takes place on Wednesday 10 July at the House of Commons. They will be put forward to the final heat, with the possibility that they could be announced – at the same Palace of Westminster event – as national winner of The Care and Compassion Award! Proceedings will be hosted by Dr Sarah Wollaston, Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Ceremony, with a special performance planned from the NHS Choir.

Ann Radmore, Regional Director for NHS England and NHS Improvement in the East of England, comments:

“I was impressed by the high standard of all entries from the East of England this year and choosing between the dozens of champions, who all go above and beyond, to go forward and represent our region has been incredibly difficult.”

Sharon Allen OBE, Chief Executive at Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, explains the impact of the team’s work:

We have seen the Arthur Rank Hospice Community service grow extensively since its launch. Thousands of patients and their loved ones have benefited from the specialist care offered from our multi-disciplinary team. The Community Specialist Palliative Care and Hospice at Home teams are small teams making a large impact, through managing a wide-ranging caseload. They are highly skilled and continue to evolve to meet the needs of our patients and their families.

We are thrilled to have been shortlisted and thank both Heidi Allen and Rt Hon Steve Barclay, MP’s, for their nominations. We hope that this will help raise even greater awareness of the importance of end of life care in the home and that it will encourage healthcare professionals and people living with life limiting illnesses to reach out, understand and benefit from the holistic support that the Arthur Rank Community team can deliver.”
