We’re delighted to share that long-standing volunteer and Arthur Rank Hospice Charity Ambassador, Robert Barnes, has been named a finalist in the Ely Hero Award – the most prestigious category of the evening.
This award recognises someone who goes above and beyond. Someone who quietly makes a difference, puts others before themselves, and inspires through their actions, not by seeking recognition.
Robert has been part of the Rotary Club of Ely for 25 years and has supported Arthur Rank Hospice Charity since 2010. Motivated by the care his wife, Lisa received from the Charity, over the past 14 years, he has helped raise awareness of the Charity’s work and supported countless fundraising events across Cambridgeshire.
As an Ambassador, Robert attends events and speaks on behalf of the Charity, helping others understand what hospice care really means. He listens to people’s stories, whether they’ve had personal experience with the Hospice or want to share why they support us. He’s also spent time volunteering on the Inpatient Unit and in our Living Well Service, where his presence and quiet kindness have brought reassurance to patients and families alike.
Reflecting on his nomination, Robert said:
“I am delighted to have been selected as one of the finalists. All the finalists have in their own way tried to make a difference, so to all of them – whatever the category – congratulations.”
Robert is always keen to help others and do what he can to make a difference, whether that’s by lending a listening ear, attending an event in support of the charity or quietly offering help where it’s needed.
His nomination and place as a finalist in the Ely Hero Awards is richly deserved. We’re proud to see his years of service and selfless dedication recognised in this way. Congratulations, Robert and thank you.
