Mandy Thornton, aged 63, is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She runs her own psychotherapy practice working from her childhood home. She is also a ‘Friend of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity‘ and kindly explained her reasons why:

“In 2014, my father was unwell as he had Multiple Myeloma. My Mum had already passed and since then I’d promised Dad he could come and stay with us when he could no longer cope at home – in the home that he, a skilled craftsman spent the first ten years of my life renovating and making it habitable.

The hospital were reluctant to let him go home alone as he needed help with his personal care and for his own safety needed supervision. He kept trying to escape from the hospital on the top floor which was eight floors up, through a fire escape! So, they’d had to post a nurse on 24 hour watch to keep him safe. I knew he was dying and fast. They suggested the Hospice at Home Team from Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.

Someone came round to see me and we talked through everything. After the equipment was ordered and arrived, Dad was discharged to my home, with help from carers and Hospice at Home at night.

It was an incredibly tough time and I remember thinking two or three days in, that I didn’t know how we’d manage. I absolutely couldn’t have done it without the help of the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home team. It was so utterly overwhelming to be doing this and going through this and I would fall apart at the smallest thing – so I can’t imagine doing it without their help.”

“Dad sadly passed away five days later. The Hospice at Home Team were angels – that’s how I described them, then and now.”

“More recently, in January 2025 a very dear friend of ours was looked after in the Inpatient Unit at Arthur Rank Hospice and he and his wife and daughter were beautifully supported. This brought back to me how important Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is.

To anyone considering donating to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, I would say ‘Do it! You never know when you, a friend or a loved one is going to need them. When we are going through this last phase of our life – which I believe is as important as our birth – we want to know that we or our loved ones are going to get the very best of care and Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is the place that can provide it.”
