Places are no longer available for the Sahara Challenge in March 2020.
However, if you're ready fit, up for a challenge and want to trek the worlds hottest desert, you can take part in Different Travel's Open Sahara Challenge between 14th - 19th November 2019.
This three day trek in the Moroccan Sahara gives you an insight into this vast and diverse landscape as well as the Berber way of life. You will spend the days trekking across ancient dried up river beds, sand dunes and vast sun-baked plains. Camping each night gives you a chance to experience the stunning stars in the night sky (weather permitting) and the traditional Berber cuisine cooked by the team is second to none.
Day 1: London - Marrakech - Ouarzazate
Depart London for Marrakech. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and set off for a journey across the High Atlas Mountain Range to our overnight stop in in the village of Ouarzazate (approx.5 hrs. drive). Dinner and overnight in a local hotel.
Day 2: Ouarzazate - Sahara Desert
It's an early start to travel south, crossing the stunning Atlas Mountains and following ancient caravan routes into the arid scenery of the Sahara desert (journey time approx. 3-4 hours). After lunch you will meet up with the local Berber guides and their camels and start the trek. Overnight under the stars in bivouacs (weather permitting) or tents.
Days 3-4: Sahara Desert
We spend the next two days completely immersed in the Sahara desert with only the support team and our other trekkers for company. We traverse sand dunes and rocky, lunar landscapes, passing the occasional oasis and mile after mile of breathtaking beauty. We are aided by our local Berber team comprising of the guides, cook and camel owners (the camels are our porters, carrying our luggage and equipment). Each day you can enjoy the varied Saharan landscape and learn about how important it is to respect and comply with the forces of nature in the desert. Each night we will camp in tents, or if the weather permits, we can sleep under the stars. Life here feels a million miles away from daily life in the UK. On average we will cover 15-20km per day but this will vary.
Day 5: Sahara Desert - Oulaid Driss - Marrakech
Our last day finishes with a trek back to the village where you will bid farewell to your team of camels and the local Berbers before we head back overland to Marrakech (journey time approx. 8 hours). We'll stop for lunch in the oasis town of Ouazazarte, the location for several movies sets, and once back in Marrakech will enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner.
Day 6: Marrakech - London
Enjoy some free time to explore the exotic city of Marrakech before transferring to the airport to fly back to London (dependent on flight times).
N.B. This itinerary may change due to unusual weather patterns, wildlife movements, the ability of the group and so on. We will do our best to keep to the set itinerary however we cannot be held responsible for changes that might occur outside of our control. In all such circumstances your guide and tour leader will have the final say in the interest of the health and safety of the group.
