Team ARTHUR Sahara Challenge

Don't miss your opportunity to make a HUGE difference and gain a once in a lifetime experience!

Applications close on Sunday 2 June at 5pm

Riding high on the enormous success of the October 2014 and March 2016 Hospice Sahara Treks we are planning a third adventure into the desert.

On 21st March 2020, Team Arthur will once again descend on Marrakesh for another bespoke challenge in the Sahara Desert! This time, we are throwing a new element of the challenge into the project which will directly benefit the local community in Marrakesh! Join Team ARTHUR on this magnificent journey and help raise vital funds for the hospice.

Before the trek even begins, you will make your mark on the local community when Team Arthur partake in a Community Project; tasks could include redecorating, gardening or refurbishment in settings such as a medical day clinic, home for the elderly or organisation which supports vulnerable children. Then, experience the wonder of the Sahara as we trek 50km across sand dunes and rocky terrain with experienced local Berber guides. A caravan of camels trekking with you carry your tents and each night you will sleep under the stars and enjoy freshly prepared local cuisine. Working with our partners, Different Travel, we will provide the trip infrastructure for you allowing you to get on with your amazing challenge.

Do you want to follow in the footsteps of 29 nine previous Team Arthur members?Join the team today and start making a difference to people living with life-limiting illnesses.

There are two ways to take part in this challenge.

  • Pay the £375 deposit and raise the minimum sponsorship of £1990 to cover the cost of your challenge.
  • Pay the £375 deposit, self-fund the challenge costs of £995 and then fundraise £995

The Sahara Challenge 2018 has been completed!

Eighteen intrepid and adventurous challengers jetted off to the Moroccan Sahara Desert on Thursday 15 March 2016 for a 5 day, 70km trek across sand dunes and rock outlays all for hospice care.  Guided by Different Travel's own experienced guide plus native Berbers and a caravan of camels who carried the heavier items such as tents, water and cooking supplies. With no running water, no shade and only a beautiful canopy of stars for light at night the group had an amazing once in a lifetime experience.

In a #TeamArthur first - a family of three brothers and one sister were amongst the trekkers. Click on the video below to see and hear #TeamSpencer's full video blog story.

#TeamSpencer consisted of siblings, Lloyd Spencer (Sutton), Jade Plant (Chippenham), Grant Spencer (Haddenham) Karl Spencer (Peterborough). Their Mum, Sandra Spencer, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2014. As they explain on their family JustGiving page, Sandra “coped marvellously taking chemotherapy then radio therapy all in her stride” and “for two years there were ups and downs […] but eventually Mum got tired, she was exhausted by it all. The last infection she got was a rare and serious one. It set up camp in her liver and caused her so much pain and sickness that she decided in November 2016 that she’s like to be looked after at Arthur Rank Hospice.”

The family had a last Christmas with their Mum before she passed away on 19 January 2017: “They sorted out her pain quickly and kept her comfortable without making her too groggy. We got to make so many more previous memories and because of that we’d like to give something back…”

Whilst their Mum was being cared for on the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice, the four heard about the Sahara Trek which was taking place in March 2018 and were inspired to take part. Their aim was to raise a combined total of £10,000 “to help many other families”. Their family fundraising total has now reached an impressive £10,133 (as of 30 April 2018).
