Colin Saintey, born and raised in Cambridge, was 82 when he died in March 2022.

To his family, friends and neighbours he was simply “Gramps” a man always on the go, full of laughter, and forever pottering about in the garden.

In September 2025, Laura Saintey, is taking on a 7000ft tandem parachute jump in to honour her Grandad and support people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end of life care. Laura shared:

“Grandad meant the absolute world to me, He loved being outside – gardening was his passion. He was so active, always smiling, always joking. A true cheeky chappy. You’d never see him sat down, unless he was having a nap.”

Colin’s diagnosis of leukaemia came as a huge shock. In what felt like no time at all, he went from being full of life to feeling worn down and tired. As a family, they focused on making the most of every moment. Laura continued:

“When we were told Arthur Rank Hospice could help with his care, we knew it was the right choice, even though it was during Covid, which brought so many extra challenges. Nan caught Covid just as Grandad was admitted, so she wasn’t allowed to visit at first. It was incredibly hard. But the staff at the Inpatient Unit did absolutely everything they could to support us. They made the situation as bearable as possible.”

Colin passed away peacefully in his sleep with family by his side. Laura added:

“I can never thank the team enough for the care, compassion and dignity they gave Grandad. They helped us through one of the hardest times in our lives. That kindness and comfort is something we will never forget.”

Sarah Clayton Community Fundraiser commented:

“We’re so grateful to Laura for taking on this challenge in memory of her Grandad. Her support ensures more families can receive the same care, comfort and time together when it matters most. Thank you, Laura and good luck with the jump!”
