Scouts Fundraising Triumph

In a heart-warming display of community spirit, the 1st Whittlesford & Duxford Arrows Scouts took on a challenge in November 2023, that went beyond the ordinary. Their mission was to secure their fundraising badge, by aiming to ‘Grow £1’ for a charitable cause, and the chosen beneficiary was Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
Over the course of five weeks, young supporters showcased their creativity and determination in fundraising. From selling homemade treats, such as delicious cakes, fudge, and drinks, at the local sports clubs and music groups, to conducting a ‘Guess the number of sweets in the jar’ competition.
The Scouts further engaged their community by organising a mini raffle, with local businesses generously contributing vouchers for drinks. A miniature plant garden was auctioned off at a local Christmas fair, and personalised acrylic Christmas baubles were sold to eager buyers. They showed true entrepreneurial skills by purchasing items for £1 from Charity Shops and reselling them on eBay for a profit.
Their commitment extended beyond traditional fundraising methods. Scouts embraced tasks like doing chores for family members, ‘renting’ out their bedrooms to family visitors, and leading guided walks. They even honed their crafting skills, making and selling cakes and Paracord Woggles to fellow Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts.
Sarah Clayton, Community Fundraiser at Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, visited the Scouts meeting to share insights into the Charity’s work. She emphasised the importance of engaging with children to dispel misconceptions about Hospice Care, providing them with accurate information on how their efforts could make a difference for patients and their families.
The Scouts not only met but surpassed their Troop fundraising target. Stephanie McFarlane, Scout Leader, expressed her delight at the incredible achievement:
“The Scouts were very creative in their fundraising activities and troop collectively raised a fantastic £759.13!”
This inspiring tale of young philanthropy showcases the power of community, creativity, and determination. The 1st Whittlesford & Duxford Arrows Scouts have not only raised funds but have also become Young Ambassadors for breaking down myths surrounding Hospice Care. Their story stands as a testament to the impact that even the youngest supporters can make when they unite for a common cause.
