Hospice Nurses, Beth Bryant and Mel Turner-Page, have proudly received distinctions for their Nursing Associate Apprenticeship.

They both worked as Health Care Assistants at the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice before studying with Anglia Ruskin University, which gave them the motivation to become qualified Nurses.

Over the past two years they have spent either two or three days at University in Cambridge, writing assignments and presentations alongside days in practical environments. In addition to their palliative care experience at the Hospice they have also had placements in Mental Health, Children’s Nursing and Learning Disability settings.

Mel and Beth, who have supported each other through their studies, will continue to work at the Inpatient Unit and will move from a band 2 to a band 4. They are hoping to continue to study to enable them to move up to a band 5. Mel said:

“We both felt that, now our children are older, we had the time to concentrate on our careers and studies. It was very hard at times but we got through it and our children are very proud of us.”

Beth added:

“When I first started as a Health Care Assistant it was always an aim of mine to become a nurse. We are very grateful that the Charity has given us this opportunity. I am so glad I was able to do it with Mel as we were able to support each other through it. It has been a great period of transition moving forward over the past two years and I can see how far I have come.”

Jenny Oakes, Inpatient Unit Ward Manager commented:

“Both Mel and Beth have worked hard to complete the training to qualify as nursing associates, I am very proud of them both for not only achieving the qualification but both getting a distinction in their studies.

The whole of the Inpatient Unit team got behind them both. We would all like to congratulate them and look forward to supporting them in the next part of the journey in their careers and studies.”

Beth and Mel join Kate Barry who was the first person at the Charity to take on the training before she qualified in 2023.
