Cottenham Primary School Raises £805 for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Year 6 pupils, aged between 10 and 11 years old, at Cottenham Primary School have raised an incredible £805 to support people cared for by Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
Sarah Clayton, Community Fundraiser at the Charity, was warmly welcomed by Year 5/6 teacher, Lisa Armitage, who invited her to speak to the children about the Hospice services.
As part of their Community Outreach Project, the year 6 pupils had been keen to get involved with the Spring Chick Appeal – a much-loved annual initiative involving hand-knitted chicks filled with chocolate eggs.
After learning about the Charity’s work in a special assembly, the children came up with their own idea: they would help stuff and name the chicks, then run a school-wide sale to raise money to support people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end of life care.
The chicks had been kindly knitted by the Charity’s dedicated volunteers, and the children brought them to life, giving each one a name and preparing them for their Easter sale.
The project culminated in a hugely successful end-of-term event that raised over £800. Leftover chicks were donated to the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity shop in Cottenham, for others in the community to enjoy.
Lisa Armitage commented:
“The children really benefited from the honest and age-appropriate information Sarah shared. It helped them understand not just what the Hospice does, but why their fundraising matters. They enjoyed the project and took real pride in knowing the difference their efforts could make.”
Sarah concluded:
“We are so grateful to everyone who got involved; the pupils, teachers and wider school community for their kindness, and generosity. Their support helps local people living with a life-limiting illness to receive the care they need, when they need it most.”
