Arthur Rank Hospice Charity has released a brand-new 10-mile route for the Star Shine Night Walk. With over one hundred people already signed up, the night is lining up to be a special one.
Walking together through Cambridge, the event raises funds for hospice care to support people living across Cambridgeshire with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition, so that they can receive the care they need, when they really need it.
Starting at Shelford Rugby Club, on Saturday 22 June at 7pm, the walkers will leave together and head towards Trumpington.
There is also a 5-mile route available, incorporating a more localised, tree-lined walk.
Ian Pascu and family have signed up for this year’s event, Ian said:
“As a family we are taking part in the walk-in memory of my brother Mark who passed away two years ago in Arthur Rank Hospice. He had been in the Hospice from January until he passed away in the May.
We strongly believe that being in the Hospice gave him some extra time, and gave us as a family, the possibility to make more happy memories together. The level of care we saw within the hospice was second to none and nothing was too much trouble.
It was particularly comforting for his daughter, who was just 11 years old at the time, to see her dad in a comforting place and to see him happy.
Team Pascu on the night will be made up of me, Mark’s parents- Sue and Eugen and Mark’s daughter Kaylee. Oh, and Molly the mad two-year-old cockapoo!
We are looking forward to exploring parts of Cambridge, giving something back to the Charity and doing something as a family in tribute to Mark.”
Come and join Ian, his family and hundreds of other walkers, as we turn the streets of Cambridge green for people who need support in our community. As the sun sets over Cambridge on this midsummer evening, it’s a special way to remember and celebrate loved ones while supporting local people.
This year’s route takes a left along Grantchester Road, before reaching Grantchester Meadows. On one of the longest days of the year, walking through the beautiful meadows with the River Cam in view, it is sure to be a highlight of the evening.
Re-joining the road, the route then heads further north to reach one of the most iconic views Cambridge is known for, ‘The Backs’. A number of colleges of the University of Cambridge back on to the River Cam with their beautiful gardens covering both banks of the river. National Trust Chairman Simon Jenkins has rated the view of The Backs and King’s College as one of the top ten in England.
It’s then back into the city centre, crossing the River Cam via Bridge Street, and taking in more college views from the other side, including St John’s, Trinity and King’s.
Continuing along Trumpington Street, the famous Fitzwilliam Museum will come into view, a great photo opportunity along the way!
It’s then round past the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens before the final leg to return to Shelford Rugby Club to cross the finish line.
Star Shine Night Walk is kindly sponsored by Hamberley Care Homes, Cambridge Grove. Thanks to their support, together with the registration fees, donations and sponsorship received, we’re aiming for this event to raise over £40,000 to support people receiving Hospice Care.
