Mill Road may be closed to traffic for two months – whilst essential maintenance is carried out on the railway bridge between Monday 1 July and Sunday 25 August – but in true Mill Road style, the road is still very much open!

Three charity shop managers are working in collaboration to make sure the City knows their shops are still open for business.

Amy, from Arthur Rank Hospice, Polly, from The Children’s Society and Liz from Romsey Mill, are organising a clever reuse and recycle event for Saturday 17 August 2019.‘Making the Most of…’ has been titled to encapsulate how Mill Road’s Charity shops are: making the most of our donations; making the most of the time the road is closed; making the most of pre-used and upcycled materials; making the most of local talent; and making the most of  the local community.

So take a walk, hop, skip, jump, cycle or any other mode of transport (other than motorised!) to St Philips Church at 185 Mill Road on Saturday 17 August between 11am and 4pm, and you will be rewarded with an opportunity to meet artists, makers, fashion designers and creatives who work with sustainable media.

There will be interactive activities as well as varied shopping opportunities the well -loved local charity shops will be showcasing a wide variety of their stock, including vintage and designer fashion, ‘unusual finds’, antiques, electronics, books and bric-a-brac. Quality donations and some of the shop’s online pieces, will be available at the event.

Ever since ‘Call the Midwife’ celebrity Cliff Parisi cut the ribbon in February Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s newly refurbished Mill Road charity shop has been thriving!

Amy Carrithers, manager of the Arthur Rank Charity Shop on Mill Road said:

“When we heard about the road closing, we wanted to turn it into a positive. We think it’s a great opportunity for us to meet people who might not usually come into our shops, as well as a chance to catch up with our friendly regulars. We will also be able to let them know about our other upcoming community events, such as Bridge The Gap Walk, on Sunday 15 September. Why not pop along, say hello, get some upcycling inspiration and pick up a bargain!”
