On Sunday 8 March a record breaking 115 Team Arthur runners lined up at the start of the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon, after months of training and fundraising.
Each one with a personal reason for taking on 13.1 miles. So many of the Charity’s runners were motivated by their own experiences of compassionate care provided by Arthur Rank Hospice and wanted to do something to say thank you.
Matt Suggs ran in memory of his wife Amy who was cared for by the Charity’s Hospice at Home Team before she was admitted to the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice.

Mike, Mich and Kate ran in memory of their Mum and Aunty, Judy Purse, who was also cared for at the Inpatient Unit.

16 colleagues from Costello ran in memory of Annabel Griffiths who was cared for at the Hospice.

Kristian Turner from Ely who works at Nuffield Health Gym ran with friends and was inspired to support the Charity after volunteering on the Inpatient Unit. He said:
“It was a privilege to be just a small part of the fundraising for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, which does such important work and provides much needed support to our community.

As a volunteer on the Inpatient Unit, it’s clear to see what a difference the donations make to people using the services. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed towards our total and to the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity team who made race day go without a hitch!”
Stevie Taylor from Littleport ran in memory of her Dad Ritchie, and this was just one challenge she has set herself in March, she’s also walking 21km and finishing with a 21km bike ride. She’s already raised over £2,000 and said after the day:
“It was such an amazing atmosphere – a brilliant day for a great cause.”

Another runner Chris Hubbard from Cambridge shared:
“The last 3-4 km I had to dig deep and focus. I thought about those not around, and those that couldn’t be out there pounding the streets … this and the cheers and support from the watching crowds got me to the finish.”
The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity Cheer Squad were out again in full force along the iconic route. The two cheer teams waved pom poms, banged clappers, shouted and cheered all morning! These teams were made up of CEO, Sharon Allen, OBE, volunteers and supportive and clinical staff.
The TTP Cambridge Half Marathon is one of the most anticipated events in the city’s sporting calendar, and once again, Arthur Rank Hospice Charity was proud to be an official Charity Partner and have such a strong representation. The runners ranged from running club members to enthusiastic newcomers who had not run more than 5km before!

Gina Thomas, Events and Challenges Manager at the Charity, waited at the finish to congratulate the team and said:
“We are incredibly grateful to all our runners for their commitment and dedication. It was an emotional day for all and seeing so many #TeamArthur supporters running, encouraging one another, and honouring loved ones made the day truly special.
Their efforts have helped raise over £80,000 (including Gift Aid) to support people across Cambridgeshire and also help to shine a light on the important work we do.
Our huge thanks go to all our runners, everyone who sponsored them and all the cheer squad team.”

Vicky Knight, Registered Nurse who works at the Inpatient Unit at Arthur Rank Hospice made headline news when she was recorded as the fastest person to run a half marathon dressed as a vegetable.
Wearing a ‘light but hot’ pea costume Vicky crossed the finish line after 1 hour 21 minutes and 21 seconds. Vicky commented:
“We were a group dressed as different vegetables going for a running challenge to raise money for charity. These included carrots, cabbage, aubergine, broccoli, potato, sunflowers, marigold and my sister Katie as a sweetcorn.
We ran for ‘Cultivating Change’ – a Charity which supports gardening in communities for mental health and wellbeing.

I see how the gardens at the Hospice mean so much to patients, visitors, volunteers and colleagues too. It makes such a difference to be able to see the flowers and the birds from the patient’s beds and for those visiting the Hospice or the Bistro.”
