40km, three summits and 3400 calories (each!) in 9.5 hours.

On Friday 17 May friends from Ely City Golf Club completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge (Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough) together raising over £3,000 for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity who support people in Cambridgeshire living with a life-limiting illness and those who need end-of-life care.

Golfing friends Tim Ashman, Allistair Berry, Karl Mackender, James Smith and Steve Sharp were joined by Steve’s brother-in-law Neil Smith to attempt the challenge, aiming to achieve 24 miles of non-stop hiking in under 12 hours. They managed not only to complete the challenge but did it in a staggering 9.5 hours!

They wanted to do the hike to fundraise for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, to say thank you for the incredible care given to Hazel Sewell (Neil & Steve’s mother-in-law) last year, Allistair’s father-in-law, Roger Hines, in 2015 and Karl’s mother, Jean Mackender in 1993. They all had a terminal cancer diagnosis, but the care received from the Hospice made a huge difference to everyone, as they looked after both patients and families and created a loving and calm environment. They said they couldn’t have gone through such a difficult time without their help. The team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for the sponsorship and all the messages of support. ‘Back to the 80s’ Star Shine Night Walk

On Saturday 18 May, Allistair’s wife Michelle Berry along with friends Alicia Hatley and Carol Lythell joined 500 others to walk 10 miles round Cambridge, also in aid of the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. They set off at 8pm and walked from Shelford Rugby club towards the city centre, passing Kings College and many famous Cambridge landmarks, and were back by midnight to collect medals and enjoy a well-deserved bacon sandwich!

Together team ‘Carol and the crazy cat ladies’ have raised nearly £700.

Now in its 11th year, the Star Shine Night Walk brings people together providing a poignant yet celebratory opportunity for families, friends and work colleagues to celebrate the memory of someone dear to them.

The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity has to secure £8.25 million every year in order to deliver their services free of charge, only half of which comes from statutory sources with the remainder raised by the local community. By raising money, we can help enable others to receive the same care that Hazel, Roger, Jean and their families received.
