In September 2024, Nick Mutch will be cycling across the length of the Britain in memory of his dad, Alan Mutch, whilst raising vital funds for the Hospice that cared for him before he died in June 2022.

Alan, who was a keen engineer and is remembered for being a ‘doer’ and his love for living in the Fens, spent a number of weeks at the In-patient Unit at the Hospice in Cambridge. Nick and his family were able to visit most days including Alan’s dog, Hector.

Nick commented on the care his dad received:

“It was amazing. I feel privileged that we received such care at such a difficult time. “

The challenge is no easy feat. Starting at Land’s End in Cornwall and ending in John O’Groats, Scotland, the cycle ride will cover nearly 1000 miles across nine days, averaging about 110 miles a day! Having already taken on this challenge ten years ago, Nick reminisced:

“It is a very tough challenge, both mentally and physically. It involves cycling back to back over some tricky grounds. The first two days in Cornwall cover the hardest terrain. It will be difficult again, but I wanted to challenge myself. It’s fair to say this is going to be a very very tough ride.”

When asked what his dad would think about him taking on such a challenge, Nick responded:

“Dad would be proud of me.”

Vic Kidd, Community Fundraiser, commented:

“Nick is taking on such an incredible personal challenge to give back to the Charity. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to his dad, whilst supporting future patients and their loved ones. We are so grateful for all of Nick’s efforts and support in raising both funds and vital awareness for the Charity.”
