Janice kindly shared here experience working for the Charity with us:
What’s your role at Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and where are you based?
I am the part time manager of the Regent Street shop in Cambridge.
How long have you worked for the Charity?
I have worked for the Charity for three and a half years.
Where will we be most likely to see you?
I am mainly based in the Regent Street shop but I sometimes help out in our Mill Road shop too. Our day consists of sorting through donations, pricing and making sure the shop is always full and tidy. Working with our lovely team of volunteers is always a joy.
What’s the best thing about what you do?
When I come to work I never know how the day will be, no two days are the same.
When donations come through the door it can be quite surprising what you will find.
We have regular customers who not only come into their favourite charity shop but also enjoy a chat and sometimes you need to be a good listener.
What inspired you to join the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity team?
I worked in retail many years ago I then decided I wanted to try something different and became a Head Housekeeper in various care homes. After a break I thought I would return to retail and when I saw Arthur Rank Hospice Charity were advertising for an Assistant Manager I decided to try my luck, I loved the thought of working for a charity. Luckily I got the job and I am still here and still enjoying it.
Can you describe the most rewarding aspect of your role at the Charity?
This is my first time working for a charity and I like to think I am helping, anyway I can, to raise funds that help run the fantastic hospice services. I really enjoy working with Helen – the full time manager who has been with the Charity for over fifteen years and is a fountain of knowledge regarding the Charity and the running of our shop. Together, with our wonderful team of volunteers we ensure the shop is friendly and welcoming.
What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering for the Charity?
I would encourage anyone who can spare a couple of hours a week or even a fortnight to apply to be a volunteer. Our volunteers love meeting our lovely customers and enjoy being part of a team, they find it a real social event and always leave the end of their shift with a smile on their face.
If you would like to volunteer for the Charity please pop into any of our shops, check our website arhc.org.uk/volunteer or email volunteer@arch.org.uk or telephone 01223 675872 .
