Good symptom management is essential to improving the quality of life for patients and their families. This session aims to inform your practice and refresh your knowledge about how to manage some of the common symptoms experienced by palliative patients.

This session includes:

  • Identify the common symptoms experienced at end of life
  • Review the elements of assessment and management of clinical symptoms experienced by patients with palliative disease including:
    1. pain
    2. breathlessness
    3. agitation
    4. nausea
    5. fatigue
  • Consider malignant and non-malignant diseases
  • Discuss pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of symptoms
  • Explore Holistic assessment and the role of the MDT
  • Discuss the concept of Total pain
  • Understand when to refer to specialist services
  • Recognise the personal impact of working with patients who are dying
