Mother takes the Hospice fundraising lead in her son’s memory

In 2024 Penny Prue’s son, Bob was cared for at the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice.
Penny shared:
“Bob had terminal bowel cancer and sadly died on 17 July 2024. The care he was given by all of the staff was amazing, We are all so very grateful for making his death a good experience for us all.”
Being in the Hospice made a real difference to Bob and his family. Penny, her daughter and grandson were able to spend valuable time with him during those final weeks.
“We had time together to say goodbye. My daughter visited every day and chatted with him. I would visit every day and just sit and be with him.”
They made the most of the time they had. Bob enjoyed walking in the gardens and watching the birds at the feeders and would walk up to the lounge to watch the fish in the fish tank. He even persuaded his sister to buy two Catfish and Barry and Garry to help clean it.
Bob also enjoyed a haircut from Nicky, at Salon HD and relaxed with gentle neck massages from one of our Complementary Therapists. These small moments brought comfort and lifted his spirits.
Everyone helped him to make every moment count and, when he was well enough, he enjoyed short trips out, walking the dogs at Lammas Land, a trip on a punt on the River Cam and his friend took him for a drive in his flash sports car.
In September 2024 and 2025, Penny and their dog Oreo took part in ‘Lead On‘. Penny explained why:
“Walking with my dog is my way of thanking you all, We haven’t raised as much this time, but it makes me feel I’m helping in a very small way. The support given to us was invaluable.”
Sarah Clayton Community Fundraiser, said:
“Lead On is such a special challenge. Whether someone is walking in memory of a loved one, or just wants to support local hospice care, we’re so grateful to everyone who takes part.”
