The Mears Group University of Cambridge Branch supports Hospice Charity

A brilliant team of volunteers from the Mears Group from the Cambridge branch, kindly gave their time and donated resources to lay a shed base in the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity garden.
The shed was donated by an anonymous donor and will be used by the Hospice’s volunteer gardeners to help keep the gardens beautifully maintained for patients and visitors to use.
It was the second visit by the Mears Group to volunteer, following another group coming to jet wash the paths in the gardens. The group said it was a pleasure to be able to again support the Hospice by building a shed base for the volunteer gardeners’ new shed. The team sourced the necessary materials and gave up two days of their time to support the project to lay the new base.
Danny Smitheram, Clair Cirket, Daniel Coulson and Daniel Lynch teamed up to remove the shingle from the area down to a depth to take a base of type 1, this was ‘whacked’ down, and then a base of cement laid and levelled. They said it was an enjoyable two days, the team worked so well together, each team member having their role to play and the end result was a very fine shed base!
Clair Cirket, Operations Manager, said:
“We were really pleased to help, whilst there, we could see how important the Hospice is to patients, visitors and also the people who work there. The gardens were lovely, and such a peaceful and tranquil space, (when we are not there!) It is clear to see that the gardeners take great pride in what they do and we feel very proud to be able to help provide a space for them.
The whole team thoroughly enjoyed their two days at the Hospice, and said what a great place to support – on return to the office, other colleagues were all asking when they could also support in any way they can!”
The shed is a brilliant addition to the garden and will help the amazing volunteer gardeners be able to continue maintaining the Hospice’s gardens.
Sophie, Corporate Partnerships Officer commented on the works completed:
“Thank you so much for all the incredible efforts and support. As the team from Mears saw, the gardens are such an important part of the Hospice, providing a peaceful space for visitors and patients, and by being able to install the shed means our volunteer gardeners can continue to maintain the gardens to a high standard. By offering their time for free it enables us to spend the money to support people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end of life care.”
The Mears branch are keen to continue supporting the Charity throughout the year and look forward to seeing the new shed in use. The Charity are so grateful for their support.
