For the past two years, Jon Dowrick has brought happiness to patients, visitors and staff at Arthur Rank Hospice with his four-legged companion, Hercules one of our much-loved ‘Pets As Therapy’ (PAT) dogs.

Each fortnight, Jon and Hercules arrive at the Hospice and do what they do best – lift spirits. Hercules brings smiles and comfort wherever he goes. Patients often light up when they see him coming. Visitors stop to say hello, and staff members take a quiet moment with him between busy moments.

Jon is also living with stage 4 prostate cancer but despite the challenges that come with that, and has chosen to keep living life to the full, giving his time, his energy and his care to others.

This September, Jon and his wife, Ros will be riding the Tour de 4, a cycling route that begins at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Scotland. Born from Sir Chris Hoy’s vision to change perceptions around stage 4 cancer following his own diagnosis. Encouraging those affected by cancer directly or indirectly to come together for this inaugural event, anyone who can ride a bike is encouraged to take part. It’s a personal challenge and a fundraising effort for the Charity Jon has come to know so well.

Jon explained:

“I’ve seen first-hand the care that patients receive at the Hospice, it’s something special. That’s what made me want to do something to give back.”

He is no stranger to cycling. As a seasoned rider, he once pedaled through the South of France with a broken rib. This time, the challenge is just as personal he his just as determined.

Jon and Ros set up a GoFundMe page https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-arthur-rank-hospice-2h37b to support Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and is inviting supporters to help them reach their goal.

We’re incredibly grateful to Jon, Ros and of course Hercules for the time, dedication and kindness they continue to show our community.
