Cambridge to Ely Trek

Embark on a breathtaking riverside trek from Cambridge to Ely and make every step count for Arthur Rank Hospice Care—whether you're walking in memory, or for the joy of the trek, your support helps provide vital care to those who need it most.

Join us to trek along the Fen River Way and challenge yourself to walk around 17 miles with #TeamArthur on Sunday 22 March 2026.

Take in the beauty of the local landscape and enjoy the views of Ely Cathedral rising above the Fens as you complete the last leg of the journey.

*Everyone is welcome; individuals as well as friends, family or corporate groups and with each step you take you will be confident that you will be supporting people receiving hospice care.

The route

Starting from Cambridge City Centre, you will venture through the City of Cambridge to join the River Camb. Next you will follow the path along the river, passing various locks and seeing the local wildlife, before linking up with the Great River Ouse. In the final few miles, you can take in the beautiful views of Ely Cathedral before you finish your incredible achievement in Ely.

Event information

The event will start from Cambridge City Centre (venue tbc) and we ask that you arrive from 8am, to be ready to set off at 8.30am.

The route is mostly flat, with very little ascent or descent. Some sections of the trek take you along narrow paths where the ground is uneven, so sturdy walking boots with ankle support are recommended (and it will be a huge benefit if these are worn-in before the big day)! You’ll undergo a range of different terrain and uneven pathways so you may want to bring walking poles for extra support.

Duration

This event is not a race, and everyone will be able to trek at a comfortable pace.

The 17 mile trek should take approximately 6-7 hours but can take some walkers up to 9 hours. The route is designed to be challenging but is achievable for most people provided you train well in advance.

Costs to Register

There is a registration fee to pay of £25 (if you sign up before 30 September this will be this reduced to £20). This covers the costs of organising the event.

In addition we will ask you to commit to raise a minimum of £100 to support people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end of life care. We will, of course, support you all the way with fundraising tips.

No, we are afraid not, due to the length of the trek and facilities on route this event isn’t suitable for dogs.

As this event is a challenging 17 mile trek, there is a minimum age of 16 to participate. All 16 and 17 year old will need a parent or guardian with them. You will be asked for this at registration.

This event takes place at the end of March 2026, and the weather will be part of the challenge! As part of the trek is across the fens, it can be windy. It is important that you come prepared for all types of weather.

Guidance on what to bring can be found in our kit list, which you will receive once you have signed up.

In cases of extreme weather such as thunderstorms, very high temperatures and extreme rainfall we will check the route and may have to stop the event if the route is deemed unsafe.

The trek will start from a central location near to Cambridge train station. This can be accessed by many local bus routes as well as the train itself. The event finishes very near to Ely train station, making travelling to and from the event very easy by train.

Parking is available at both Cambridge and Ely train station, please note this is not linked with the event and charges will apply.

The registration fee only covers the costs of putting on the trek, so we have to set a fundraising commitment to raise funds for our services. This ensures the costs of the event are covered with your registration and all of money fundraised is spent on providing our vital services.

We ask you to commit to raise £100 as a minimum, but encourage you to raise as much as you can!

We are here to help and support you with your fundraising.

You can find out more about how we are funded here.

We’ll set you up with an online fundraising page which you can personalise and share with your friends and family to get sponsorship.

We’ll also give you you helpful hints for other ideas.

We hope they’ll agree that trekking for around 17 miles is a challenge and worth sponsoring!

Walking around 17 miles in a day is a challenge, and we would recommend training ahead of the day.

Depending on what level of fitness you are starting from, you will need to build up your walking so you are used to this kind of distance and have worn in walking boots.

Training advice will be given from the Fundraising Team.

We ask you to sign up online to secure your place. You can sign up here. You will be asked to fill in a short online form and pay your registration fee.

If you register by 30 September 2025, you can save £5 on your registration fee.

Yes of course! Everyone is welcome, and you’ll be sure to find some like minded #TeamArthur trekkers to walk with.
