Sanketh, our In-patient unit volunteer

27 March 2015

I volunteer on the inpatient unit once a week on a Tuesday. I choose to volunteer at Arthur Rank Hospice because I was looking to do something to give back to the community but I have also gained so much from the experience. I intend to become a Doctor so my time as a volunteer has been invaluable.

I enjoy talking to patients and hearing their amazing stories. The importance of listening cannot be overstated. It’s important as a volunteer to be mindful of patients’ wishes and only talk to patients when they desire. Communication underpins medicine and it’s important for doctors to see their patients as the unique individuals they are as opposed to solely a disease to treat.

For anyone looking to volunteer, I say go for it! There are many different roles within the hospice and your contribution will be really valued.I am just about to finish my final year studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. I have applied for graduate-entry medicine and intend to become a doctor. I shall carry the skills I have gained from the hospice into my future career in medicine.

I would like to thank all the incredible staff at Arthur Rank who make the hospice a welcoming place for patients, visitors and volunteers alike.
