Stephen, Data Manager

04 September 2019

My role is divided into two main areas. The first concerns data collation and dissemination and mainly centres on the monthly dashboard which is produced for the NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group as well as the Charity’s Clinical Care Board, Business Care Board and the Board of Trustees.

The dashboard generally focuses on patient-related performance within the Hospice but also includes statistics on staff mandatory training, hand hygiene audits, incident reports and much more. I frequently work in conjunction with heads of service to make improvements on what data we record and how best to present it visually. Other examples of data collation include submissions to HospiceUK and the NHS Safety Thermometer.

The second part of my role deals with systems administration, predominantly Donorflex which is a fundraising database used to record information about the Charity (e.g. supporters, donations raised, and events organised by Arthur Rank Hospice). Maintenance of the system occurs daily: changes to supporter details, updating mailing preferences and general reporting.
I collaborate with several departments including Finance (database and finance reconciliations) and Fundraising (preparing mailshots for upcoming events and monthly/quarterly newsletters) and can be found in the Administrative Support Office pretty much throughout the day .
I’m also the system administrator for the Sentinel system, which records incidents and risks identified throughout the Hospice and the actions taken to reduce or eradicate those risks. I oversee user maintenance, reporting and staff training.
On a personal level, due to the variation of what I do I’m frequently learning new skills and techniques which helps my role to evolve. However, working with colleagues and instigating solutions for bespoke requirements and seeing them come to fruition is the most rewarding aspect of my job.
