Bethany, Occupational Therapist

30 April 2018

I work Monday to Friday and you will see me on the inpatient unit (IPU) or in the day therapy office.

I work alongside a therapy team who work across day therapy, in the community and the Inpatient Unit. Our team consist of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and we have a Therapy Assistant.

I start my week attending the multi-disciplinary team meeting., where we discuss how each professional can support our patients and identifying any needs that can be met. So I’m always working alongside our doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social worker, chaplaincy and the family support team.

My role involves working with our patients to set meaningful goals; this may include supporting them to manage their symptoms, such as anxiety, fatigue, breathlessness and pain. This can be through providing relaxation, mindfulness or talking them through other techniques they can use to help control their symptoms.

Alongside the physiotherapists, we assess peoples moving and handling to ensure they are doing this safely and to help reduce falls. I may also work with assistive technology or collaborate with the wider team to provide equipment that supports patient’s independence and safety.

I also support with discharge planning on the Inpatient Unit. I co-facilitate meetings with our patients and families, supporting them with this process. I may go out on home visits to assess any adaptions that may need to be put in place, in order for our patients to go home and then organise any equipment needed.

The best thing about my job is collaboratively working with the patients and their family to help empower them through goal setting. My aim is to maximize their self-management strategies and provide independence where I can.

The team I work with are so friendly and supportive and I am very proud to say I work as part of the Arthur Rank Hospice team.
