I work a 9 hour shift from 10pm to 7am with the Hospice at Home team, either with a patient in their own home for the night, providing nursing care and symptom relief and support to the family, or as the ‘On Call’ nurse responding to calls for help from our Health Care Assistants who are working out in the community. 

They may contact me for help with personal care or repositioning of their patient or because I need to assess regards symptom relief. This could involve giving pain or anxiety relieving injections or giving advice on alternative methods to relieve distressing symptoms. Other nights a visit may be required to offer emotional support to staff.   

Hospice at Home cover a wide area. Some nights when on call I may leave the office at 11pm, having ensured all our staff have arrived safely for their shift, and get called from one patient to another and not return to the office until 6-7am, having covered 100+ miles. On the nights I am assigned to be with a patient, I leave from home in time to get to my destination in time for 10pm, whether it be 20 minutes or 1 hour and 20 minutes away from home.

I love my job and the team I work with. It is very rewarding to know that I have contributed towards enabling my patients to remain at home, within familiar surroundings with their loved ones.
