Karen, Complementary Therapy Coordinator

07 March 2018

When in the Hospice you are most likely to see my bright blue shoes (sign of eccentricity?!!) flashing up and down the stairs between the Day Therapy Office and the Therapy Rooms in the Wellness Suite coordinating day to day issues with the team.

However, the majority of my day is spent doing supportive care aromatherapy treatments out in people’s homes.  There are four of us in the team practising a variety of complementary therapies, and we support all areas of the Hospice – Day Therapy, the In-Patient Unit, Hospice at Home, and support the Community Team with Outpatient appointments and domiciliary visits.

We see on average just under 1800 patients and carers per year and helping to alleviate symptoms ranging from anxiety, fear and depression to nausea.

Even after 25 years I never fail to be amazed at what simple touch and essential oils can achieve.  The best thing ever is treating a person who is having a rough time and expecting nothing; and seeing a relaxed, smiling face at the end of it.
