Arthur Rank Hospice’s 1st birthday plans: join the party!

12 October 2017

Arthur Rank Hospice is inviting you to help celebrate the first birthday of their new home, as they join together with 200 other hospices across the UK, for Hospice Care Week 2017. As part of the week’s activities, the Hospice which cares for adults living with a life-limiting illness in our county is launching its 1st Birthday appeal to raise £20,410.96: the cost of running the Hospice for one day.

Hospice Care Week led by national hospice and palliative care charity, Hospice UK, runs from 9-15 October. The theme this year is “We are hospice care”.  Carly Ward, Matron on the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit explains: “This Hospice Care Week is about celebrating everyone who makes ‘Team Arthur’. None of the care we provide to thousands of people of each year would be possible without the support of those who surround all of our organisation and care. Whether is it a nurse with our Hospice at Home service, a night porter at one of our sites, a volunteer who does the tea round on our ward, a chef who prepares fresh meals for our patients, a corporate partner who sponsors an event, a media journalist who shares our stories, a supporter who marshals for us at an event, or someone has fundraised for us in the local community through their own efforts: each makes a massive and important contribution. We want to say thank you for your amazing support over the last 36 years - together ‘We are hospice care’!”

This week additionally marks a month until the 1st birthday of the Hospice’s stunning new home.  On 11 November 2017, it will be exactly a year since doors opened to patients at Shelford Bottom. To celebrate the special occasion the Hospice is saying ‘No presents please!’  Instead, with the public’s support it is aiming to raise £20,410.96 - enough to run the entire Hospice services for 24 hours -between now and the end of November.

‘Team Arthur’ – which includes the Hospice’s own staff and volunteers, as well as its wider community of supporters and families - is inviting residents across Cambridgeshire to join in with them as they party! You can:

Hold your own fundraising Birthday Party at home or in the office, complete with party hats, cake and an unwanted presents amnesty or raffle! (Email to let them know your plans)

Give a gift at the Hospice’s 1st Birthday campaign page on JustGiving - £14.17 will pay for 1 minute of vital all-encompassing care for the thousands of people who need Arthur Rank Hospice’s care.

In addition the Hospice’s shop windows in Great Shelford (Woollards Lane), Cottenham (High Street) and Cambridge (Mill Road and Regent Street) will be specially dressed all week with a yellow Hospice Care Week theme, as a thank you to all those involved in the Hospice’s care; particularly those who shop in store and donate quality items. Those visiting the shops can pick up a 1st Birthday invite and take a photo in the Hospice Care Week ‘mirror-posters’. You are then invited to post selfies or photographs on Facebook or Twitter, tagging the Hospice (‘ArthurRankHospiceCharity’ on Facebook and @ArthurRankHouse on Twitter) and using the hashtags #WeAreHospiceCare #HospiceCareWeek and #BestBirthdayPresent.

It costs £7.45 million each year to provide vital, free of charge, care and services to people living in Cambridgeshire with a life-limiting illness or condition. That’s £20,410.96 every day, £850.46 every hour, £14.17 every minute and 24p every second.

To learn about why every pound and penny is important, please visit the Hospice’s website at or watch Lucha’s story below to see how our care made a real difference at a time that mattered to her and her family.

The care provided by Arthur Rank Hospice in people’s own homes and at the hospice’s sites in Cambridge and Wisbech includes medical care, wellbeing therapies such as massage, emotional support such as counselling and volunteer-led support, including patient transport. Each year across the UK 200,000 people with life-limiting illnesses or conditions receive hospice care.
