Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Originally an In-Patient Unit alone, we now provide a range of services including Day Therapy and Outpatient clinics, counselling services and Hospice at Home nurses in the community.

Specialist palliative care is the care given to patients, their families and carers when the patients’ condition no longer responds to curative treatment. In this situation, quality of life and the needs of the individual become the focus of care.

The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity works in partnership with the NHS to support patients, their families, staff and volunteers at Arthur Rank House. This year the Charity must fundraise over £1 million to meet our financial commitments at the Hospice.

In Patient Unit

The charity supports Arthur Rank House In-Patient Unit in many ways including:

  • Funding several vital staff posts
  • Providing free transport for patients and their relatives
  • Funding our Bereavement Counselling service
  • Supporting education for staff and volunteers via the Dr Tim Hunt Education Fund
  • Running the Tea Bar and maintaining the Visitors' Kitchen
  • Undertaking major refurbishment projects including the courtyard, Italian and Day Hospice Gardens
  • Hairdressing Salon
  • Shower Room
  • Library
  • Rehabilitation Suite

Day Therapy

"It really lifts your spirits to come here.  Since I've been coming to Day Therapy I am a different person - much happier and calmer."  John, a Day Therapy patient.

The Charity's prime financial responsibility is funding Day Therapy at Arthur Rank House.

The aim of Day Therapy is to provide physical and emotional support and alleviate the anxiety and fear experienced by patients. Patients and their carers have access to specialist professional care, complementary therapies, art and craft therapies and the mutual support of fellow patients.

People who have been diagnosed with life-limiting illness can be referred to Day Therapy by their General Practitioner or District Nurse.  Any health or social care professional should be able to talk to to you about being referred.

The Education Department - Schools Project Co-ordinator

The Education Department offer sessions to teachers and support workers in primary and secondary schools who to help children cope with loss and bereavement.  The Schools Project Co-ordinator's remit is to broaden this service further by reaching out to sixth form colleges and nursery providers, and by offering schools  tailor-made education sessions for staff and to help teachers plan sessions around loss and grief.

The  Schools Project Co-ordinator will also be working with local primary schools by bringing children into Arthur Rank House to share stories with patients about school and creating artwork from that to be displayed.

It is hoped that as well as being mutually therapeutic for both patients and school children, this project will also help dispel some of the myths around hospices and introduce a new audience to what we do.

For more information about the work the Education Department are undertaking, please contact Cathy Alban-Jones on 01223 723003 or e-mail cathy.alban-jones@cambridgeshirepct.nhs.uk

Hospice at Home

Kateâ’s wish was to spend the last days of her life at home. The Hospice at Home nurses imbued confidence in any ability we had to cope and they instilled a sense of security and inner peace in their patient, Kate.

Their guidance, we believe, allowed Kate to leave as she wished, privately, at peace in her own home, knowing she was very much loved and would be very much missed.  Not alone, but surrounded by the love and affection of those that cared for her.  Janine, whose family was supported by our Hospice at Home service.

Hospice at Home provides specialist palliative care for adult patients at the end of their lives enabling them to remain at home if that is their wish.

Our dedicated team of highly trained and experienced nurses provide medical care, emotional support and personal care.

In addition to the care given to patients, the Hospice at Home nurses also offer vital support to families as they face the emotional and practical challenges of caring for a loved one.

Volunteers

Our team of over 200 volunteers play a vital role throughout Arthur Rank House and work alongside staff to support our patients and their loved ones.

The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity funds all aspects of volunteering including funding our Voluntary Services Team and providing full training and support for all our volunteers.
